Engure Nature Park

Bird Paradise and Habitat Diversity
Engure Lake Nature Park is located along the coast between Engure and Mērsrags. Renowned for its rich birdlife, it’s one of the most diverse locations in Latvia for bird species, and is home to an Ornithological Research Centre and a birdwatching tower.
More than 180 bird species, including many rare and protected species, nest in the park. The area is also home to more than 800 species of vascular plants, along with rare and protected habitats, such as calcareous fens with brown bog-rush, transitional mires, and sloughs. Salt grass meadows have developed along the lake shores, and the waters are home to pink algae and water lilies. This is a suitable breeding habitat for northern swans, bitterns, and black-headed gulls.

Protected Plants and Insects
Engure Lake Nature Park is home to a rare and protected species of the orchid family – the red helleborine (Cephalanthera rubra).
Other plants on the coast include sea milkwort (Glaux maritima), sand pink (Dianthus arenarius), and the small pasque flower (Pulsatilla pratensis).
Among the protected insects, the site is home to the blue-winged grasshopper (Oedipoda caerulescens).
